The Texas Coffee School Brewing Methods Class is an exciting 1-day coffee course that focuses on the fundamentals of quality-oriented coffee brewing. Using today's most popular specialty coffee brewing devices, students will gain the skills essential to perfected coffee brewing. Understanding the primary factors that affect coffee extraction and learning the technique associated with quality-oriented coffee brewing is vital to brewing consistently great tasting coffee, and knowing how to troubleshoot if it isn't. (Believe it or not, poor tasting coffee is often a result of improper brewing – not necessarily bad coffee beans.)
This coffee class is broken into two parts. In the first half of the day students will learn the theory, process, and technique associated with quality-oriented coffee brewing through hands-on experimentation and tasting.
Topics will include:
• The essential elements to quality-oriented coffee brewing
• Developing your coffee tasting palate
• How to determine correct coffee to water ratio
• Proper grind size/setting
• Selecting an appropriate water temperature
• How to determine appropriate brew time
• Selecting an optimum brewing method for your specific coffee
• Proper operation of brewing equipment
• Water quality
• Coffee freshness and storage
• Troubleshooting poor tasting coffee
• Cleanliness and upkeep of brewing equipment

In the second half of the day students will learn the hands-on brewing techniques associated with many popular brewing methods including:
• French Press (steeping)
• Chemex (hand pour-over drip)
• Hario V60 (hand pour-over drip)
• Clever Dripper (full immersion brewing)
• Toddy Cold Brewing System (cold brewed iced coffee)
• Fetco Brewer (traditional automated drip brewing)
